'Grey's Anatomy' doc returns to old haunt to promote sex education

By Jeff Commings | Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.29.2006
"I'm just trying to indoctrinate sexual health" into women's minds, "Grey's Anatomy" actress and former Tucsonan Kate Walsh said of her work on Planned Parenthood's Board of Advocates.
The life of a celebrity has its ups and downs.
For the past three years, it's been a lot of ups for Kate Walsh.
For starters, the San Jose, Calif.-born, Tucson-raised actress is one of the stars of "Grey's Anatomy," the three-year-old ABC hospital drama that birthed McNicknames and became TV's No. 1 show.
Her instant fame started the second Walsh appeared on "Grey's" as Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd, the jilted, philandering wife of Dr. Derek Shepherd and one-third of one of TV's greatest love triangles.
"I never imagined this," Walsh said in an interview here Saturday, as she returned to her onetime hometown, where she attended Catalina and Rincon high schools as well as the University of Arizona.
"For a show that's in a competitive environment to stand out is great," she said.
With celebrity comes the opportunity to become a celebrity face for issues she holds in high regard. Organizations came calling rather quickly.
She's been involved with the Special Olympics and the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and hopes to get Habitat for Humanity interested. But right now her priority is Planned Parenthood, the organization known mostly for its stance on abortion rights, but which also pushes for sexual and reproductive education.
Attending a benefit for Planned Parenthood at Club Congress on Saturday — the same place she once worked as a cocktail waitress while discovering herself as an actress — Walsh spoke with joy about the bizarre fact that people pay attention to her more now that she's on a hit show.
"For whatever reason, if you're on TV — especially if you're on TV — people will say 'We'll listen to her,' " Walsh said. "You can be a service for things. It's odd, but it's great."
Walsh, 39, said she's always wanted to push for women to speak out more about sexual topics, either with their doctors or sexual partners. It's a great coincidence that she plays an OB-GYN, and great fortune that she works on a show that aims, in the end, to be more than a sexual romp in the closets and bedrooms of Seattle doctors.
Walsh mentioned a recent episode featuring a Catholic wife who came to Addison asking for her fallopian tubes to be tied. "That was an episode I thought was going to create some controversy," she said. "But I was surprised that we were able to do the episode."
But Walsh isn't only representing Planned Parenthood and its ideals through her popular character. She serves on the organization's Board of Advocates, and she said she's working with her publicist and others to create a makeup compact that can hold a condom.
"It's still a stigma for women to carry a condom," she said with a slight roll of her eyes. "I'm just trying to indoctrinate sexual health into their minds. It'll help women feel empowered."
Walsh said she's comfortable being one of the public faces of a well-known organization. But the information she's learned from experts is overwhelming.
"I learned a lot of things on the job," she said. "But these people definitely have taught me much more than I imagined."

A conversation with: Kate Walsh
Monday, October 23, 2006
On the heels of a "very adult" breakup, the Grey's Anatomy star contemplates soul mates, shoe obsessions and girl-on-girl vibes.
I feel like I'm watching a real-life Pantene commercial as I catch sight of Kate Walsh bounding down the street — her shiny, cinnamon-colored waves bouncing with every step. At 5'9", in a floaty vintage dress and 3-inch wedges, Walsh looks picture-perfect. But there's something about her mischievous smile that makes you think she'd walk straight into a pole just to get a laugh. In person, Walsh is infinitely funnier (and more feminine) than Addison Shepherd, the intimidating — no, make that scary — doctor she plays on the ABC hit Grey's Anatomy.
"When I first came on the show, my character was like a Wicked Witch of the East, dressed in Prada," she laughs. "Then throughout the season you see her becoming a little more vulnerable, a little more like me."
Practically a nomad, Walsh, 39, was born in California to Irish-Italian parents, grew up in Arizona, and studied theater in Chicago before moving to New York and taking a shot at Broadway. She headed to Los Angeles 7 years ago, and though she earned fans as Nicki on The Drew Carey Show, she remained comfortably unfamous until joining the cast of Grey's in 2005. Life has changed dramatically since then, and Walsh admits to?wearing sunglasses in airports now, after one fan ran up "and literally screamed in [her] face."
Despite newfound stardom, she doesn't seem at all self-conscious amid the crowd at Hollywood lunch spot Ammo, where we chat between spoonfuls of chicken soup.
I hate to sound corny, but you're glowing. Did you just work out?
Well...I was supposed to do Pilates this morning. I got as far as putting the sports bra on. Then I realized there was no way I was about to drive through traffic and go to the gym. Noooo. So I threw my bathrobe on over the bra and read the paper. Sometimes I hope that through osmosis I might get a workout — just by wearing the clothes.
You wore a fat suit when you starred on The Drew Carey Show. Did that give you perspective on what it feels like to struggle with weight?
I don't think there's any woman who doesn't struggle with body image or weight. I was intoxicated with the story line on the show — a woman who worked hard to lose weight then dates this guy who eats. And she eats with him and gradually gets bigger and bigger until she can't stand herself. I remember going out to eat while wearing the fat suit, and some people stared at me like I was an animal going to the trough. People can be really cruel.
Ever done anything crazy to stay slim?
I've done every diet there is. When I quit smoking years ago, I did the cabbage soup diet. I went on Atkins because I was going to have foot surgery. I knew I wouldn't be able to move or work out and I was afraid of becoming huge. I remember sitting by the pool with my legs elevated, eating a mixing bowl's worth of whipped cream with Equal in it.
Yeesh.
Yes, it was so disgusting!
Why did you have foot surgery?
I had bunions. Such a charming word. It's partly hereditary. Both my mother and grandmother had them. Part of it is from wearing pretty shoes. Your feet get screwed up. And I love high heels.
How many pairs are in your closet?
I probably have, like, 100 pairs of shoes. That's a pretty healthy shoe situation. I keep them in boxes with Polaroids on the front. That's how much of a shoe weirdo I am.
Obviously you like to be organized.
Yes...I struggle with control. I'm not anal. I'm not a clean freak. My house is a mess. But I definitely struggle with wanting things my own way.
How so?
I was going on a date recently, and the guy was like, "Okay, this place or this place?" and I happened to know of three better steak restaurants. So I texted back, "Well...how about this place instead?" and he was like, "Wow! Are you trying to take control of the date?"
How long have you been on the dating circuit?
My boyfriend and I split up a month ago, so I'm just starting to date.
Are you heartbroken?
No, I'm all right. We were together for a year and a half. He's a great guy, but it was long distance so it was really hard. It was a mutual, very adult breakup.
Ever felt like you'd found a soul mate?
I've had some amazing relationships, very transformational. But the idea of a soul mate is tricky. I get so many different things from so many different people in my life. Maybe it's dangerous to say, "You're the one, and there's only you." I really thought the last guy was it. So now I'm in this place where I'm like, "I don't know anything anymore." And I'm okay not knowing.
In Under the Tuscan Sun, you played the lesbian girlfriend of your Grey's costar Sandra Oh. What was it like preparing for that part?
That's the fun thing about being an actress: You get to do things you wouldn't normally do — like be a lesbian. It was funny, that part came in the middle of a trilogy of lesbian roles for me. I had just played a closeted lesbian suburban wife in an indie movie, and then I played a lesbian detective on Karen Sisco. Do I give off a girl-on-girl vibe, I wonder? Or is it because I'm tall? I guess the chicks just dig me!
On Ellen you talked about a night in jail. You threw a cue ball at a mirror in a Chicago bar?
Yes — I was maybe 26 when that happened. It sounds so punk rock, doesn't it? The weird thing is I've always been relatively conservative. I take my risks onstage, in my work. So the one time I decide to rage, the universe goes, "Uh-uh, sorry, you can't do that!" I remember walking into the cell and there were two other women in there spooning. I was like, "Oh my God — lady sandwich! What's going to happen to me?!"
Maybe that was the redhead in you coming out?
Actually, naturally I'm a sort of medium mouse.
Did people treat you differently when you changed your hair color?
I behaved differently. When I was a blonde, guys treated me like a girl...a girly girl. Then as a redhead, I was a little more sassy, maybe a little more boorish — more how I am inside.
So you feel like red is the real you?
Yes. Being blonde was always other than what I really am. I thought I wanted to be one of those softer, girly girls. Then I grew out of that. I realized I'd never be a sweet girl. [Laughs] Never.

'Grey's Anatomy' Hits Close To Home
Sunday, October 22, 2006
NEW YORK, Oct. 19, 2006
Actress Kate Walsh Opens Up About A Storyline That Hits Close To Home
(CBS) In tonight's episode of "Grey's Anatomy" Addison (Kate Walsh) reveals that she and McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) have divorced, while McDreamy learns the truth about Addison's relationship with Mark (Eric Dane).
Aside from the relationship drama, Dr. Bailey treats a young mother struggling to deal with a life-threatening breast cancer diagnosis.
The latter is familiar territory for Walsh.
"My mom, she's a breast cancer survivor and because of that I had started getting mammograms once a year, starting at age 30," Walsh said in an interview with The ShowBuzz Wednesday. "Previous to that my doctors had said, 'You don't have to start until 40 and older,' so I would have never even thought about it. You know, it's not the most comfortable procedure but it really is the best thing we've got doing in terms of early detection."
According to Walsh, tonight's episode, which is dedicated to breast cancer awareness, is especially powerful. "It's so compelling mostly in that (the character) is so young, she's in her 20s. I think a lot of people just aren't aware how young you can be and be diagnosed with breast cancer. The message, it's just heart wrenching, but it is ultimately one of hope," she said.
Walsh, 39, began her career in Chicago theater. She appeared on shows such as "Mind of a Married Man" and "The Drew Carey Show" before landing the "Grey's" gig in 2005. The Arizona native watched her mother, Angela, battle cancer after she was diagnosed around age 60.
Her mom is healthy today and will be watching tonight. "She watches every Thursday but particularly this Thursday," Walsh said. "I'm so happy that she's here, she's a strong powerful force of nature and I'm glad she's with me today."
Producers saw the episode as an opportunity to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness month.
"We have such a big audience and it's a great opportunity to put story lines out there that are socially relevant and medically relevant," said Walsh. "Our show-runner Shonda Rhimes feels very passionate about it, as do many of us who have personally come in contact with the disease."
The episode, titled "Oh, The Guilt" was made in association with the Ford "Warriors in Pink" campaign, benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The foundation is thrilled with the attention the show will bring the disease.
"For people to see this and to hear it discussed openly in real life terms is extremely important for all of us who are fighting this war against breast cancer," said Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The cast has shown its support for the campaign by loading up on garb. "We've been wearing the scarves and T-shirts and caps and thermal shirts," she said. "I think that, most importantly, just to get the message out there of getting exams for women and early detection can make this — if you are diagnosed — a very livable disease."
Walsh can't dish much about the drama that will develop throughout the rest of the season, but she says that after tonight's episode we'll know just as much as she does. For now, though, it looks like things are over between Addison and McDreamy and that Addison and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) may be working toward a friendship.
"I think last week's episode was a great step in the right direction. Life and relationships are complex so they'll continue to have those twists and turns," she said.
And what about the on-set drama that made headlines last week? Walsh said she wasn't there when actors Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington nearly came to blows while filming a scene.
"I'll say that we're all hugely grateful to be a part of the show and really what the show is about is great story telling and great writing and great acting," she said, adding that the whole cast does hang out off-camera, going to dinner and such.
Even with all of her success as a TV surgeon, she has no groundbreaking secrets to beating the common cold. She said, sniffling through the interview, "I'm fine. That's why we've got cold medicine."

Shades of Grey with ‘Anatomy’s’ Kate Walsh
By Scott Huver, Hollywood.com Staff
Kate Walsh - She’s the woman you love to hate.
In her role as Dr. Addison Shepherd on ABC’s mega-hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, actress Kate Walsh is the ultimate obstacle for the budding romance between the series’ heroine Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and “Dr. McDreamy” (Patrick Dempsey)--especially since she’s his estranged wife. But as easy as it is to root against Addison, Hollywood.com found it hard not to be charmed by Walsh’s bedside manner during our recent consultation.
Hollywood.com: Talk about an actress with timing--literally. You sign for a few episodes of this unknown little midseason medical show, and suddenly you’re a regular on one of primetime’s biggest hits.
Kate Walsh: “It was definitely a blessing. That never happens. I was originally only supposed to do a five-episode arc, and they asked me back and I said yes, and it’s just been unreal. I’m pinching myself. It never happens, where you get invited on, and then it’s already a hit show.”
HW: What kind of viewer reaction are you getting to Addison since she showed up to shake things up?
Walsh: “I think they like the character despite themselves. That’s generally the feedback I get, even though TV Guide led with ‘The Most Hated Woman on Television.’ I was like ‘Really? I don’t think so.’ I think she’s edgy and smart and tough and rains on the parade, and yet as you watch the show as it continues through the season, you see the softer side of her, being more human. But it’s fun to play that.”
HW: What can you tease us with? What’s coming up for TV’s hottest love triangle?
Walsh: [Coyly] “It’ll be a bumpier ride!”
HW: In your own fantasy scenario, what would you like to see happen with your character?
Walsh: “Hah! Rule the world! I wouldn’t mind her being chief of staff. I’ve got my eye on the brass ring.”
HW: The holidays are right around the corner and your show’s all about the hook-up. Which of your cast mates would you like Addison to catch under the mistletoe?
Walsh: “It’s a toss up between Isaiah Washington and Justin Chambers, I’m not gonna lie to you! And throw Jim Pickens into the mix--he’s pretty hot. And T.R. Knight...They’re all so cute, and there’s a lot of flavors. And Sandra Oh and I had a moment in Under the Tuscan Sun. Who knows? Maybe we’ll go that way around again.”
HW: Which is a nice segue for our random holiday question: What was the best--or maybe the worst--gift you ever received?
Walsh: “My mother gave me acrylic booties when I was 22 and living in Chicago and really just wanted Rice Krispie treats. She sent me acrylic booties in a care package for Christmas, and also industrial strength tear gas, because mace wasn’t enough for the streets of Chicago, so that was possibly the worst gift ever.”

In Step With...®Kate Walsh

By James Brady
Published: June 18, 2006
She plays the tough superdoc Addison Shepherd on ABC’s hit series Grey’s Anatomy and has been labeled by TV Guide “the most hated woman on TV.” But when I had breakfast with Kate Walsh, she was anything but hateful.
Ms. Walsh is a tall, lovely woman with a great smile and a store of fascinating stories. She was in Manhattan to promote the new fall TV season (Grey’s third) at what the networks call the “upfronts,” when they trot out their big stars for Madison Avenue execs and the press. While Kate had poached eggs and toast, and I drank decaf, I asked what that was like for the actors.
“We’re paraded like monkeys,” she explained. “Here and there, we’ll meet an autograph-seeker. And they always say, ‘It’s not for me. It’s for my daughter...Phil.’” Kate laughed, searching my face to be sure I got the joke.
I asked about Grey’s Anatomy, which will be moving from Sundays to Thursday nights after the summer. “It’s hard work,” she said. “A long day. They’re always editing on the set and changing things. But I don’t have to work every day, because it’s a big cast.” How does she get along with Patrick Dempsey, who plays her “dreamy” but decidedly on-and-off husband? “We were polite at first,” Kate answered. “But when you play a married couple, you tend to start acting like one, and the gloves come off. We do have a real relationship now.”
Kate—who also recently has been “doing bits” on Comedy Central with David Spade—admitted she’s “not a great fan” of hospital shows generally, but she does watch TV. “Actors are always saying they never watch television,” she said. “My favorite show of all is Deadwood.”
When I asked how old she was, Kate answered right away—“38.” Then she deadpanned: “Can’t you write that I’m 33? You can say: ‘At the very young age of 33, Kate was just being whisked around on a glitzy press tour in Brazil, and now she’s here in New York. And this, she says, is the most fun time of her life.’”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brady’s Bits
Her name, Kathleen Erin Walsh, sounds totally Irish, but her mother is Italian. And her famous red hair on Grey’s Anatomy is “fabricated,” said Kate, who confesses it’s really “sort of mousy.” She remembers San Jose, Calif.—where she grew up—as a tough town. “I had a gang contract out on me when I was 10,” she said. Incredulous, I asked what for. “I wore glasses,” she replied. Kate began acting at the University of Arizona, then studied in Chicago before heading to New York “to starve and look for roles,” said Kate. “My brother, Joe, did house-painting, and I helped out. On one ceiling job, I couldn’t afford a ladder, so I tied the brush to a broom handle.” Joe is now a writer and director. “We’ve written a script,” she said. “It’s a comedy set in Ireland called Bridie.” Any hopes for its future? “We’ll get it made,” she said confidently.

What's Up, Doc?
Saturday, October 21, 2006
There's a short Q&A with Kate in the new People magazine:
Life for Grey's Anatomy's Kate Walsh is all about hospital rounds. Oh, and drinks with a prince.
Her character Addison Shepherd may have broken up with Dr. McDreamy, but Kate Walsh isn't splitting from Seattle Grace any time soon. The Grey's Anatomy star, 39, talked to Scoop about heating up with McSteamy, facing off against CSI and her first big splurge (hint: Patrick Dempsey is to blame).
So what's the deal with the new guy, Eric Dane (aka Dr. McSteamy)?
He's like a statue. Every time he pauses, he's just gorgeous. And so nice and so talented.
Is this the end for Addison and Derek?
You'll see some interesting things play out. There aren't tidy beginnings and endings. It's always messy, and--no pun intended--there's always a gray area.
Your character wasn't too popular with fans at first. Has that changed?
Even if fans want Derek to be with Meredith, they sympathize with Addison. She's just like every woman struggling to make a relationship work.
Were you stressed about Grey's going up against CSI on Thursdays?
Yeah, I was nervous. CSI is a great show--I was in it! [She played a transsexual informant.] But they are two different animals. There's room for both of us. You know, that's why we have the TiVo.
Do anything fun on hiatus?
I mostly did press. We went all over Europe promoting Grey's. It's huge everywhere. [The cast] went to Monaco and got an invitation to dinner with the prince. My stylist said, "So I see on your itinerary, cocktails at the palace. Is that, like, the palace?" I was like, "Yeah, [it's] not a club... The palace!"
Has your life changed in the past year?
I [had one] big splurge, which I am driving now. It's a 1985 Aston Martin convertible. When I moved [to L.A. seven years ago] I got a station wagon. Then I got a little car crazy. I have to say, Patrick Dempsey did influence me a lot in that area.
Any buyer's remorse?
No! This was hand-built. It's gorgeous--an elegant British muscle car. It makes doing errands much more palatable.

Walsh Denies Reports of 'Grey's Anatomy' Unrest
Wednesday, October 18, 2006
HOLLYWOOD - Grey's Anatomy star Kate Walsh insists everything is fine on the set of the hit TV show one week after costars Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington got into a fight.
The pair nearly came to blows on Oct. 10 during a spat over shooting issues on the series.
Walsh, who plays Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd on the show, claims it’s back to business as usual on the set.
She explains, "We're all good. They had a squabble. I actually wasn't there that day."
"I can tell you that we were shooting in Seattle just a week ago. All I know is I was there for one scene and there was no one there."
"And then the guys were there, both Isaiah and Patrick, doing their stuff, and there were literally throngs of women, like 300 women, and everybody was going crazy. It's all good."
Walsh is grateful that she wasn't involved in the scuffle, adding jokingly, "I have big peasant hands. Who knows what I'm capable of."

Healthy and Tasty
Sunday, October 15, 2006
Often the biggest culprit in celeb moms packing on pounds is that common misperception that pregnant women need to "eat for two." In fact, as Friedland tells us, a woman with child really only needs 300 hundred extra calories per day. So after giving birth, stars have flocked to customized diets to help them eat what they need without undue restriction and effort. Emmy-winning songtress Michelle Branch, for instance, enlisted the help of Fresh Dining, an LA-based diet delivery outfit that provides gourmet-caliber (but not gourmet-calorie-count ) meals and snacks daily to stars' doorsteps. Branch says it helped her shed her baby weight in mere weeks, and TV star McKenzie Westmore used Fresh Dining to drop the poundage as well, while Nicollette Sheridan, Tori Spelling and "Grey's Anatomy's" Kate Walsh have also ordered up chef Michael Bowen's healthy-tasty creations.

Skies are blue when ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ visits
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
The men of “Grey’s Anatomy” were in Seattle last week, mostly shooting wilderness scenes and therefore cleverly outwitting my stalker capabilities, as the one thing I would not do for McDreamy is go camping.
However, Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington were among the cast members spotted in Pioneer Square and downtown Seattle during brief filming on Tuesday morning, where they were promptly mobbed outside the Westin Hotel and signed a lot of autographs.
“They were great with the fans,” said James Keblas, who was on location with the cast as director of the Mayor’s Office of Film and Music. “At one point, Isaiah Washington went over to this crowd of women and said, ‘When I say Patrick, you say Dempsey.’ He got the whole crowd riled up.”
Speaking of getting hordes of women—and some men, to be fair—riled up: McSteamy (Eric Dane), who appeared wearing only a towel in the season premiere, has been promoted to a series regular. McDreamy or McSteamy? What would Addison do? What would you do? E-mail me if you can decide.
Anyway. All of the “Grey’s” men were here and they were wearing backpacks, the better to shoot scenes for a camping trip, Keblas said. Most of the filming took place in the mountains, outside Seattle proper, according to a publicist for the show. ABC’s Seattle-set hospital drama films locally several times a year.
Kate Walsh, who plays estranged wife to Dempsey’s character, was also in town to shoot some ferry scenes. It’s unclear whether she’ll end up canoodling with her ex in a sleeping bag, but one can only McDream.
