The Grey’s Anatomy star gives her diagnosis of the dating scene today...and her romantic Rx for finding Mr. Right. (Plus: her celebrity crush!)
On ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, you have your choice of two extremely sexy suitors.
If only my life was more like my character’s!! Then again, I don’t want to be like her—she’s not happy since she can’t quite decide between the two! But hey, it’s not a bad way to make a living!
Have you ever had that in your life, where you had to pick between a few men?!
No, but I recently tried dating after breaking up with someone last year. I think it’s very hard to date; I’m very much a one-man woman. I just don’t understand how you can date different men at the same time! It’s really difficult!
What are some of the biggest challenges to dating today?
We are in the 21st century, where male and female roles have started to melt together; people don’t know what exactly they are supposed to be or do. It’s really difficult to say “Well, what are the rules?” “Are there rules?!” It’s certainly not our parents’ generation. It’s just a crazy world out there and that definitely plays a role in all of this. My parents met and married when they were 20, had five kids and worked. My life, on the other hand, is nothing like my mother’s. So that’s a bit odd. At this point, I think we are all making it up as we go along. Particular to Los Angeles, work is king. Everyone comes out here to get a job, not to get involved with someone. So you really have to make the time to date.
What have you learned about romantic relationships along the way?
Well, the romantic part of me used to always think, “Hey, the romantic thing can happen just like that!” And I really think that’s maybe not the case. It really takes time to get to know people. It’s a process—it’s not as romantic or exciting maybe. Also, you meet people and you think, “Oh, I would never want to go out with him.” And then you give it a few dates and you think, “You know what, this is a great person.” So beyond the first impression, beyond the physical, you really have to give it a chance.
What’s a dating no-no for you?
I had this happen once—I was on a date and this guy said to me, “I want to take you here.” And in my mind, I knew three other places to go that are better. But sometimes it’s not good to say that! A good response would be, “Hey, that sounds lovely.” To say, “Well, actually, I know of a better place” makes the guy feel like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about—not a great way to start off a date! I think women are so powerful, but you have to kinda shrink that down a bit around first dates. Well, maybe not shrink down, but let the guy make the decisions—at least the first time around.
Given how tricky it is to date, do you still believe in love?
Yes, absolutely. I think it’s very easy to be cynical… I have to believe in love. My father once told me before he died, the most important thing in life is love. And I really believe that to be true.
Do you have a celebrity crush?
Oh yeah: Clive Owen. He’s number one on my list! And George Clooney of course! And Justin Timberlake! When she remarried, my mom chose a guy 17 years younger than her, and it’s worked beautifully!

Kate's New Boy Toy - And It’s Not Dave Annable!
You can kiss those Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters) rumors out the window, there’s a new boy toy in town!
Sassy redhead Kate Walsh, aka Dr. Addison Montgomery, finds love in the arms of a new mystery male on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The 39 year-old Grey’s Anatomy star, who recently took out her bangs, spent the morning at Radford Hall.
After spending the night, the new dirty blonde beau left Kate’s place later Saturday morning to meet up with Kate for lunch at the Mustard Seed Cafe.
Kate was not shy about kicking up her feet into her man’s lap in between affectionate kisses. The lovebirds took their PDA-fest to the next level in his Porsche, where things looked like they got hot and heavy!

Redheaded beauty Kate Walsh, aka Dr. Addison Montgomery, was spotted filming a scene for Grey’s Anatomy… or her Grey’s Anatomy spin-off.
Kate, 39, shot her scene while sitting in a dark red Porsche Speedster on Wednesday in Malibu, Calif.
During a break in filming, Kate sent emails on her Blackberry while walking along Zuma Beach in her Ugg boots.
